Your newsletter open rate is lying to you

Most newsletter advice trains you to watch the wrong numbers.

High open rates don’t guarantee sales.
Lower open rates don’t automatically mean something’s broken.

What matters is knowing which metrics actually change outcomes and which ones you can safely ignore.

That’s how I look at newsletter performance and it’s what I teach inside Newsletter Profit Club.

Let’s break it down.👇

🎧 NEW PODCAST EPISODE

Episode 250 of the Creator’s MBA podcast is live, and it’s a deep dive on newsletter metrics that actually drive revenue.

We cover:

  • What open rate really measures (and what it doesn’t)
  • Why click-through rate is about activation, not curiosity
  • The most common reason people click but don’t buy
  • How unsubscribes can signal clarity, not failure
  • The metric that tells you whether your newsletter is pulling its weight financially

If you want your newsletter to become a real business asset in 2026, not just another weekly task, this episode will help you see where to focus.

QUICK TIP

#1. Open Rate → Recognition

People don’t open emails because of subject lines. They open them because they recognize you.

If open rates are low, the fix usually isn’t better copy, it’s showing up consistently enough to be remembered.

#2. Click-Through Rate → Action

Clicks tell you whether your email did anything at all.

No clicks usually means the email didn’t ask for one. Every issue should move the reader somewhere, otherwise it’s just information.

#3. Conversion Rate → Fit

Low conversions aren’t a confidence issue. They’re an alignment issue.

If the offer doesn’t match the moment your reader is in, nothing else will matter.

#4. Unsubscribe Rate → Signal

A slow, steady unsubscribe rate is normal.

A sudden spike is feedback. That’s when you pause and look at what changed.

#5. Revenue Per Reader → Reality

This number tells the truth.

If revenue per reader is low, growing the list won’t fix it. Fix how the newsletter makes money first.
