Stage 4 of 5 · Retain
Where the Treadmill Ends
"When the Retain stage works, your life just gets easier."
|
|
Most creators pour energy into the Attract stage of the Growth Flywheel. More customers, more signups, more seats filled. But here's where most people get stuck: they haven't built anything for the customers they've already acquired. So every month looks the same — find new customers instead of growing revenue with the ones you have.
That cycle is exhausting. You're constantly chasing the next sale instead of scaling with what you've already built. Want to know what successful 6- and 7-figure creators do differently? They focus on retention. They stop chasing and create a place where the same customers keep coming back, keep paying, and keep growing with you.
|
A paid community isn't a course. It's not a Facebook group. It's a home base your audience actually pays to be part of — and when it's built right, it becomes the most predictable revenue in your business.
|
And here's where most creators hit a wall.

Most creators have a great offer, engaged students, and a solid curriculum — but their community is duct-taped together across three or four different tools. Their course is here, their community is there, their emails go out from somewhere else. And members feel it.
When your members have to remember which platform has what, the experience breaks down. And a broken experience leads to churn.
That's exactly the problem Circle solves. It brings your community spaces, courses, live events, memberships, and payments together in one place — so your members always know where to go and actually keep coming back. No more stitching tools together. One experience, one login, one home for everything you've built.
Over 20,000 communities run on Circle — including Entreprenista, Ali Abdaal, and Jay Shetty. If you're serious about retention, start with the infrastructure. Try Circle free for 14 days, no credit card required.

The 1% Move
Add One Identity Marker to Your Membership This Week
|
|
People don't cancel things they feel they belong to. They cancel subscriptions. And right now, most membership businesses are built like subscriptions — content drops, a login link, maybe a community tab nobody checks. The member shows up when they remember to and drifts when life gets busy.
Belonging is different. Belonging means your member has a role, a history, and a reason to care what happens next inside your community. It means when they think about canceling, they're not just canceling a payment — they're walking away from something they're part of.
The question worth asking this week: have you built a subscription or a place to belong?
|
This week's move
Create one identity marker for your community this week — a founding member badge, a "top contributor" role, a milestone title for members who hit 90 days. Then announce it publicly so current members feel recognized and newer members have something to work toward.
|
This works because belonging has to be made visible. A title, a badge, a role they earned — it shifts how a member sees themselves in your space. They're no longer a subscriber. They're someone who's been here and earned something for it.
You don't need a platform feature to start. A pinned post, a community role, a shoutout in your next email. Start there.

Your Next Step
Build the Full Retention System — Inside the Mastermind
An identity marker is one move. But retention is a system — and the full system includes onboarding, engagement triggers, re-activation sequences, peer connections, upgrade paths, and a clear offboarding flow that gives members a reason to stay before they go.
Inside the Creator's MBA Mastermind, we work through each of these pieces in sequence — so you're not patching one leak while three others are open. If you're serious about building a membership that compounds, this is where that work happens.

P.S. I've spent days building Claude skills I use in my own creator business — and I just added four of them to the Creator's MBA Boardroom for free. We're talking landing page copy, newsletter value props, lead magnet ideas, and a tool for making hard business decisions (yes, really). Copy. Paste. Done. P.S.S. The Retain stage is often where the biggest revenue leaks live — and most creators don't know it because they're too focused on new sales to notice the churn.
