This Week's Deep Dive

Most newsletters stop growing between 1K and 5K. Here's why.

And the move that breaks through, without writing a single extra post.

Honestly, most newsletters stop growing between 1,000 and 5,000 subscribers. And it's rarely about the content getting worse or the creator slowing down. The number just stops moving.

What's happening is that the thing that worked early, like sharing your work on social, asking friends to subscribe, posting in communities, stops scaling. You can publish twice a week for the next year and barely move the number.

Here's the thing: collabs are how you break through.

Most creators get stuck on this part. They hear "collabs" and think "I'll do a random newsletter swap with someone in my niche." And that's one type. But there are seven distinct types of newsletter collaborations, each one works for a different stage, and each yields a different number.

The 7 types

1. Newsletter Recommendation Swap: 30–100 subs per swap

2. Featured Guest Section: lower volume, higher quality

3. Co-Created Resource: 200+ subs when both lists promote

4. Multi-Creator Bundle: 100–500+ subs

5. Summit / Event Speaker Slot: 50–300 subs

6. Podcast Guest Spot: 20–100 per spot, compounds

7. Paid Affiliate Cross-Promo: revenue play, not list growth

Most creators try one collab. Usually it's the simplest type, picked without a clear framework, and treated as a one-off rather than the start of a system. They get whatever result they get and move on.

The picking is where it falls apart.

The actual move: pick two types based on your current list size and your superpower. Run each one consistently for 90 days. Track your numbers.

After 90 days, you'll have added 200–500 subs from collabs alone, without writing a single extra post. By month three, you'll know which one converts best for your specific niche, and you can double down on it.

That's the system most newsletter creators don't have. They have one or two attempts spread across six months, conclude collabs don't work for them, and go back to creating more content. This week we're building the system together inside Collab Fest 2026. And if you want the full breakdown of the 7 types and how to pick your 2, I just published a new post on the blog.
