QUICK LESSONS: $1M HOBBYSCOOL EXPERIMENT

When we wrapped the HobbyScool Art of Handmade Summit earlier this month, I spent time looking back on what has worked over the years, what didn’t, and what I’ll double down on next time.

Here are a few of the biggest lessons:

  • Paid bundles didn’t scale. Two launches, minimal traction. The collaboration was useful, but the model didn’t deliver growth. (Lesson: someone else's business model may not work for you)
  • Summits became the firehose. One event outperformed both paid bundles combined. (Lesson: when you see traction, go all in)
  • Creative niches outperformed other themes. Parenting/back-to-school events did ok for us. But art journaling and handmade crafts pulled the biggest audiences. (Lesson: specificity drives engagement)
  • Community platform choice matters. Moving from Facebook → Skool increased daily logins, user posts, and conversions because we controlled the environment.
  • Ad campaigns can fund themselves. One campaign delivered cheap leads; the other broke even on purchases while adding 800+ new subscribers.
