Deep Dive

What to run in October before Black Friday

Amazon and Target both run early holiday events in October and they build them around their member programs.

That way people are already shopping with them by the time Black Friday gets here.

You can do the same thing with your list.

If you go quiet in October and show up in late November with a sale, you're asking people who haven't heard from you in weeks to buy.

If you run a campaign in October, you're getting new people on your list and warming up the ones already there.

I wrote up seven October campaigns you can run and I'm running six of them myself this month. The only one I'm skipping is a free challenge.

What I'm running in October

A live workshop. It teaches something useful and invites people into Newsletter Profit Club at the end and it runs inside the summit I'm hosting this month.

A lead magnet push. I do these all the time, so October is no different.

Theme weeks. The summit is one and I'll run a few Black Friday weeks too.

A Black Friday early access list. People can sign up to hear first what I'll be promoting over the holidays.

A membership open house. I'm doing something like this as part of the summit.

Collabs. I'll keep speaking in other people's summits and contributing to their collab guides, the way I do all year.

You don't need to run six. Pick one based on where your business is right now and do that one well.

Find your line, pick your campaign

You don't have a free way in. Run a lead magnet push.

People download your freebie but don't buy. Run a live workshop.

People aren't sure what your membership gives them. Run an open house.

Your list has gone quiet. Run a challenge or a theme week.

Your audience is small. Do a collaboration.

You have a strong offer ready. Open a Black Friday early access list.

Once you've picked, here's how October lays out.

The week of October 5, point your content toward the campaign topic and open registration. The week of the 12th is your main promotion push with your dedicated campaign emails.

The week of the 19th you run the campaign and make your offer on the last day. The week of the 26th you send your follow-up emails and start talking about Black Friday.

The full article walks through each of the seven with more detail on how to run it.

Behind the Build: AI Edition · Free Creator's MBA Hey Reader, Steph Blake's flash sales used to take her a day and a half. Coming up with the idea, building the pages, writing the emails, getting it all scheduled. Now it takes her 30 minutes, and most of that is her deciding what the sale is for and reading the copy before it goes out. The emails going into Kit, the coupon codes, the tags, the records in Airtable, all of that happens without her. She was on the Creator's MBA Show this week...
